Alieu, founder at Plastic Recycling Gambia

Objectives

  • A clean, healthy, and prosperous Gambia
  • To reuse high-quality plastics in The Gambia, such as old crates and jerry cans, regrind them for recycling in the local market or to export to another country for recycling
  •  The project will thus aim to make a modest but sustainable contribution to the circular economy and the creation of decent jobs.
  • Plastic Recycling Gambia aims to remove waste from the Gambian communities and environment and repurpose it into useful things
  • To teach the locals about plastic pollution, and create local drop off points

Plastics recycling Gambia takes plastic out of the environment and reuses it

  • Plastic Recycling Gambia Ltd buys plastic waste from informal waste collectors and established companies
  • Currently, there are 17buying/collection points across the greater Banjul area and Barra. In each of these collection points, PRG has a person stationed there who buys plastics from the local residents around that area.

  • After collection, the plastic is sorted by color, type and quality and is stripped of any residual waste.
  • The clean and sorted plastic is grinded and packed in 25 kg bags.
  • The regrind is possibly be sold locally or alternatively shipped to Europe.
  •  A Grinding machine hasbeen provided enabling Plastic Recycling Gambia to produce high quality regrind and is currently testing the market in Europe and Gambia for its product.

  • Profit margins in the recycling sector are low so they need to increase their capacity to expand
  • Research into recycling in the Gambia has started to take place to ensure the financial sustainability of the company.

Intended Results

  • The company aims to sell a total of 200,000 kg of plastic to ensure its future sustainability
  • They aim to take out a whopping 30000kg of plastic each month!
  • To do this, they need help...NOW

Plastics Recycling Gambia aims to sell 200000 Kgs of plastic over the next 2 years

Relevance for the Gambia

  • This project will improve the collection, processing, and reuse of plastic waste in The Gambia contributing to a clean environment and a healthy society.
  • The project will transfer knowledge, skills, technology, and production capacity to add sustainable value to waste (up cycling)
  • Plastic Recycling Gambia Ltd will provide at least 50 jobs for low-skilled young people and a steady income for more than 30 waste collectors.

What They Need And Why!

A truck is what they really need

A Truck

Purchase of a truck to collect large quantities of plastic waste at once and also transport bags of our processed regrinds to the local buyers and even transport to Senegal or in the subregion without needing to hire a truck.

It is expected that during the project at least 200,000 kg regrinds will be produced and sold at a minimum price of D20,000 per ton. This potential revenue is included in the budget as income. When the company is successful and sufficient regrind can be processed and sold at the right price (30,000 kg per month at 20 DAL per kg), the company will be scaled up. Financing will then be sought for the purchase of a larger yard and shed and an increase in the processing capacity to 100,000 tons of regrind per month.

A Roof

Plastics Recycling Gambia Ltd currently has a yard with a permanent staff of eight. Moreover, more than 30 women are contracted to wash the collected plastic waste and in our various collection points, one individual is contracted to supervise the buying/cutting of plastics. Many local people are directly or indirectly benefiting from and making income through selling plastic waste.

A roof is needed over the yard in order to be able to continue their operations at nearly maximum capacity during the monsoon season.

Working Capital

Working capital is needed for the purchase of used plastic and the costs of processing the plastic into regrind.

Private investors are interested in the project, but some conditions have to be met before they will participate. The subsidy will make it possible to exceed their thresholds. The ability to supply and sell 200 tons of regrind should be a sufficient track record and generate sufficient cash flow to attract informal investors and/ or institutional funds to consolidate and further expand the company.

We have identified a truck as the most important thing to develop this environmentally friendly business
