Zero Waste Gambia aims to promote eco-friendly businesses

There are people all over the world who are finding ingenious solutions to environmental problems. There are expert craftspeople who use eco-friendly materials to make beautiful things, and there are artists who make environmental statements with their work! We want to give them a global platform to promote and sell their things, this will provide them the opportunity to tell their story and sell their products to the world.

Meet Isatou And The Women's initiative Gambia

“She faced 3 challenges to her dream: she was young, she was small and she was from a poor family. Yet none of that stopped her. Now because of her, some of the next generation can follow their dreams!” - Isatou Ceesay

This incredible woman began empowering other women in 1997. She gave and continues to give them motivation to succeed and skills to better their lives whilst creating unique products from waste materials. From purses, keyrings, baskets & skipping ropes made from plastic bags, to compost bins & tables/chairs made from recycled tyres. We are so impressed with the variety of amazing products, all upcycled from what was once worthless waste into unique treasures!

Meet Bamboo Man, Aka Babucarr

We're excited to announce our first Green Gambian; Bamboo Man ,aka Babucarr! He's named after his trade of course, and had has been making bamboo furniture and even buildings for a long time. When we came to him to ask about straws he was a bit bamboo-zled, no one had ever asked him to make such a small and simple design before! We said, "hey, these small straws can do big things for the environment!".

Sustainable Bamboo Straws

Say No To Plastic!

Say No To Plastic!

Since we’ve been in Gambia we’ve noticed the use of plastic straws at all of the restaurants we’ve been to. So, we asked Babucarr, known locally as bamboo man to make straws.. and we couldn’t be happier with the result!🎋

Our Bamboo straws are not only sustainable, they also provide Babacarr with much needed income and stimulate the local economy! We say NO to plastic straws, and you should too...they can be reused, they do not harm the environment, and you can feel good knowing that your one simple change goes a long long way!

Available individually or in sets. For any businesses wanting over 100, please email us at info@growing-green-communities.org

  • Usage Instructions

Please note: Because our straws are handmade from natural bamboo, each one will need washing before first use. If there is any pith on the inside of a straw, it can be brushed out and then washed. Pith is totally natural and edible so should not cause concern.

  • Can I reuse Your Bamboo Straws?

Of course...Thats the whole point! You can reuse your bamboo straw as many times as you like, simply give it a wash after use! A little tip, we carry some around with us, so when the pub, restaurant, or bar doesn't have them, we can still say no to their plastic straws!
